Straight in at the deep end for our Project Management graduate Max

This article is over a year old and as such may be out of date.

Max joined Global Marine’s graduate development programme in October and for his first six month placement joined our Maintenance team based at New Saxon House in Chelmsford.

“During my first few months at Global Marine I have gained a great deal of technical knowledge and understanding about the subsea cable industry – everything from grapnel usage to cable end balancing. At the same time I have also been able to broaden my understanding of commercial practices. Having learnt about the theory at university whilst studying for my MSc in Project Management, it’s been a great benefit to see these in practice in “the real world”.

A real highlight for me whilst working within the Maintenance Team was being able to join the officers and crew aboard the Wave Sentinel to attend a cable repair in the Irish Sea. Being at sea for 10 days was a fantastic experience, it was my first time spending an extended period on a ship and living on the vessel was great in itself, although I may not have said the same if the weather had not been so nice! On a professional level, watching the operations first hand and speaking with members of the crew gave me an appreciation and understanding of the different tools, techniques and considerations that are required during cable repair operations – something which remains firmly fixed in my mind since returning back to the office.

Some other key milestones for me have been being involved in the production and review of outside work proposals, undertaking duty mobile responsibilities and producing operational status reports before feeding back into the team.

Although I can see the real improvements and progress that I have made over just a few short months, something that became clear very quickly is to always expect the unexpected. A cliché – yes; but an apt one for the dynamic, challenging and fast-paced industry within which we work.”

Max will soon be moving on to his second placement within our Sales & Commercial team.
